Are you just entering the world of grants and wondering how writing a grant is different than writing other fundraising appeals? Join us as we look at real-life examples of successful – and not-so-successful - grants to identify ways you can improve your own grant writing. We’ll focus specifically on key parts of grant applications such as the needs, evaluation, and sustainability sections.

Lessons Learned from Winning – and Losing – Grant Proposals

Presenters:  Darcie Spar and Rick Horton

Darcie Spar began her non-profit career as an AmeriCorps member, and has since worked and volunteered for non-profits of various sizes doing grant writing and management, marketing communications, e-philanthropy, event planning, database and volunteer management, and many other fundraising activities.  She has been a member of WVDO since 2000 and a member of the Grant Professionals Association (GPA) since 2004. Darcie has more than fifteen years of experience with grants – her favorite area of development!  Currently she manages the Grants Team at Oregon Food Bank and also provides fundraising consultation and training to regional food banks and partner agencies of the Oregon Food Bank Network.

 

Rick Horton, GPC is an experienced grant professional with 35-years of work in the non-profit sector. As Education Program Coordinator and Grants Manager for the Oregon Zoo, he led efforts to expand the impact of youth, adult and family programs and secured more than $10 million in support of education, conservation, and exhibition programs. Rick was a co-founder of the local GPA chapter, a popular grantsmanship instructor, and serves as Development Manager for Adaptive Sports Northwest.
